The fun way for children to learn is by mimicking an adult or a sibling. Teaching children oral hygiene can also be done with mimicking. While you are brushing your teeth with electric toothbrushes, the child may be more apt to brush theirs with a battery operated toothbrush. They will associate them as being the same kind and want to brush their teeth the same as their sibling or parent.
Teaching children as earlier as toddler years will help to prevent damage to teeth and gums later in life. Baby teeth are as important to take care of as permanent teeth. Before your children’s teeth come in, do not use toothpaste to clean their gums; simply use water as a rinse. When teeth begin to come in use a very soft bristled brush and water.
Toddlers will want to use toothpaste but use a brand made for toddlers. The toddler toothpaste does not have a lot of fluoride in it so it will not hurt them when they swallow it. A battery operated toddler brush should have very fine bristles or use a toddler manual brush.
Dentists say we should brush for two minutes to get full results and often times it is difficult to get a child to focus on brushing their teeth for two minutes. If a child is being entertained during this amount of time they are more likely to complete the process. There are toothbrushes made for children that play musical tunes for two minutes. This teaches the child to continue brushing until the song stops.
If the child does not have a toothbrush that plays a song, the same effect can be gained with an egg timer or playing a CD. Allow the child to pick the song and explain he has to brush until it is over or set a timer with a loud ring.
Children love games so make it a game to complete their hygiene chores. Create a song with the child that sings them through each process of brushing teeth, bathing and putting on their PJ’s. Often times the child will be more than willing to brush their teeth if an adult is also brushing theirs at the same time.
Proper oral hygiene also includes cleaning your tongue and gums. Children may have difficulties doing this so gently show them how or do it for them. Flossing is also important in keeping teeth healthy. Children will need assistance in flossing as well. The children’s floss is available in various flavors and letting them choose their favorite will make the process simpler.
Correctly brushing the teeth is the number one way of preventing cavities so it is important to teach children early on the importance of taking care of their teeth. Remember children will mimic adults and while using electric toothbrushes are great for adults, children will do better with one of the smaller battery operated ones.
If you use electric toothbrushes, let your kid use a kid size battery operated one. Teaching kids as earlier as toddler years to use an electric toothbrush will help to prevent damage to teeth and gums later in life.
